Twenty-seven years after the launch of the first model and with over 1 million units sold globally, Piaggio Liberty has been completely redesigned. It thus cements its place as an ideal choice for young people stepping into the world of independent mobility, for female riders who have significantly contributed to its popularity, and for anyone of any age in need of a practical and reliable commuting solution.
The new Liberty comes in two engine sizes (the classic 50cc and 150cc) and two configurations: standard and the S (Sport) version, which features more dynamic finishes.
Liberty has long been distinguished by its elegant and refined style, and this latest evolution further enhances its heritage with an unmistakably Italian design.
New lines shape this mechanical marvel, endowing the Liberty with a thoroughly modern personality while still connected to the scooter’s legacy as the pioneer of the high-wheel segment.
The front end of the Liberty has received a significant redesign, imparting a new dynamism and sport character. The new horizontal LED headlight — highly technical and assertive — blends seamlessly into the design, creating a striking feature that enhances the scooter’s modern and robust appearance.
A signature Piaggio element, the “central tie,” now features a honeycomb grille, visually connecting Liberty with its “bigger brothers,” the Beverly and Medley.
Viewed from the side, the compact, sleek lines elegantly link the more robust front with a streamlined rear. The passenger handles from previous Liberty models have been replaced by a new, elegant aluminum element that can accommodate the rear top box and whose design influences the scooter’s overall dimensional impression.
The new Liberty surpasses the already remarkable comfort and ease of riding offered by previous versions. The ergonomic triangle of seat, handlebar grip and foot positioning have been redesigned to enhance riding comfort and provide complete control of the scooter. The vehicle’s control is improved in all conditions, thanks to the newly raised handlebar and a more upright posture.
The new handlebar enhances ride quality and houses the new full LCD instrument cluster, blending functionality with design.
The instrument cluster is now entirely digital, featuring a new 5-inch color dashboard with both Day and Night modes. This offers complete control over Liberty’s features and efficiently organizes information, including average and instant fuel consumption, and a trip computer that displays journey and mileage data.
Liberty’s new style is enhanced by its large wheels, measuring 16 inches at the front and 14 inches at the rear. The new three-spoked split rim design introduces a fresh and elegant touch of sportiness.
Chassis
The Liberty chassis benefits from Piaggio’s expertise in designing premium scooter frames. Constructed from high-strength steel tubing, this robust, tried and tested structure, combined with Liberty’s lightweight build, ensures exceptional maneuverability and ease of riding. With a generous wheelbase of 1,350 millimeters for the 150cc model and 1,370 millimeters for the 50cc version, riders experience a strong sense of stability and security at all speeds.
Lightness and stability are the two dynamic qualities that make Liberty safe for everyone and suitable for riders of any experience level.
The large 16-inch front wheel has a high-profile tire (90/80), while the 14-inch rear wheel boasts a generous 100/80 tire. This arrangement reflects a deliberate technical choice to improve handling, increase maneuverability and reduce fuel consumption. Thanks to the high front tire profile, the wheel and tire dimensions provide optimal comfort, absorbing bumps effectively. The braking system features a 240-millimeter front disc operated by a dual-piston caliper and a 140-millimeter rear drum, ensuring prompt, effective braking that remains safe and manageable, even for first-time riders. The 150cc version comes with anti-lock brakes (ABS).
Engines
Piaggio Liberty is available in two engine versions: 50cc and 150cc. Each engine class offers impressive performance, quality, reliability, economical operation, low emissions and reduced noise. All Liberty engines are advanced four-stroke, air-cooled models with electronic fuel injection. Every component, from the new exhaust to the transmission cover design and air filter, is engineered to deliver a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride.
The lightweight and agile 50cc version is ideal for young riders, including first-time users, as an entry point. This four-stroke engine is exceptionally user-friendly and economical, consuming just 2.5 liters/100 kilometers on the WMTC cycle.
The 150cc model are powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine with a three-valve single overhead camshaft configuration (two intake, one exhaust) and an enhanced electronic fuel injection system. The optimized injector positioning further boosts emissions performance. These engines are developed at Piaggio Group’s research and development center.
The design process focused on reducing friction and improving fluid dynamics to maximize performance while reducing fuel consumption. Additionally, the throttle body positioning has been updated with a newly optimized intake line sizing. This results in fuel consumption of just 2.7 liters per 100 kilometers for the 150cc model. The figure is based on the WMTC cycle.
The three-valve distribution, regarded as the most effective configuration, enhances intake, boosting engine efficiency compared to more conventional two-valve engines.
The highly advanced fuel injection system features automatic idle control, continuous mixture management and dual lambda sensors to meet the Euro 5+ standard. The new Liberty is even more environmentally friendly, with stable emissions throughout its lifecycle.
A state-of-the-art engine control unit (ECU) manages the ignition timing, mixture and phasing maps. The engine operates exceptionally quietly, aided by a silent and efficient freewheel electric starter.
Versions and Colors
The new Liberty is available in two distinct versions.
Piaggio Liberty is available in Bianco Luna and Nero Abisso. The rear rack, exhaust cover and rear-view mirrors are matte black. The wheels, side trims, rear light frame, indicators and the new Liberty logo are all styled with an elegant satin effect.
Piaggio Liberty S offers four colors: Bianco Luna, Nero Meteora, Grigio Materia and Blu Ardesia.
The wheels, side trims, rear light frame, indicator frames and the new Liberty logo are finished in glossy black in the S version. Certain elements, including a rim detail and the trim around the “tie” on the shield, are highlighted in glossy blue.
