509 Launches Ken Block Legacy Helmet https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/509-ken-block-legacy-helmet/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=202796 509, Ken Block’s Family and 43 Institute unveiled the helmet at Hay Days.

509 has partnered with the family of motorsports legend Ken Block and their foundation set up in Ken’s honor, 43 Institute (43i), to launch the KB4EVER Altitude 2.0 Limited-Edition Helmet. A portion of the helmet’s sales will be donated to 43i to help support programs promoting helmet safety.

The KB43VER Limited Edition Helmet design, a project that Ken originally started with 509 in 2022, is featured on 509’s best-selling mountain-style helmet, the Altitude 2.0.

Key features include:

 • Lightweight: Found to be less cumbersome during prolonged use.
 • Airflow control vents: Designed to promote body temperature regulation and sweat evaporation.
 • Fidlock chinstrap: Designed for easy one-handed operation, allowing riders to quickly and securely fasten or release their helmet, even while wearing gloves.
 • DOT/ECE USA certification: The rigorous standard for helmet safety and protection.

“Ken’s innovative thinking led to the concept that has now transformed into the remarkable design we have today,” said Alicia Anderson, managing director at 509. “Working with Ken’s family and 43i on this project is an honor. We are proud of how this effort inspires the next generation of riders through fresh design and 43i carrying on Ken’s legacy through giving back to action sports, motorsports and the creative arts.”

Going Beyond Business

Ken was a professional rally driver, business visionary and motorsports legend who held many passions in the powersports industry – including snowmobiling. Ken and 509 were partnering on the development of the KB43VER Altitude 2.0 Limited-Edition Helmet and finalizing design just months before his passing in 2023.

Plans to launch the KB43VER Altitude 2.0 Limited-Edition Helmet resumed in 2024 with the Block family’s decision to connect his visionary projects with the social good he created through 43i. A portion of the sales from the helmet will go to 43i’s youth programs, including Project Brain Bucket. This program aims to promote helmet safety among young riders.

“Ken was really excited about this project, giving people the chance to have a helmet with a design that he worked on. It’s cool that we’re able to carry forward his vision with this helmet while supporting 43i’s Project Brain Bucket too,” said Lucy Block, Ken’s wife, pro rally driver and Block House Racing principal.

The helmet is available for purchase at select dealerships and on Ride509.com.

Schott NYC, “The Bikeriders” Film Black Leather Jacket Launch https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/schott-nyc-bikeriders-film-leather-jacket/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=202087 Inspired by vintage motorcycle jacket designs, this limited-edition piece features authentic 1950s details and unique elements.

The post Schott NYC, “The Bikeriders” Film Black Leather Jacket Launch appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
Schott NYC announced an exclusive leather jacket on behalf of “The Bikeriders,” which was put in theaters June 21st. The jacket was created in partnership with the film’s costume designer, Erin Benach, who used many styles of modern and vintage Schott NYC jackets on characters in the film.

Following the pattern of the vintage jacket worn by the Vandals motorcycle club leader Johnny and sourcing 1950s style Conmar chain pull zippers, Schott NYC interpreted the jacket in a soft, yet heavyweight, pebbled cowhide. Staying authentic to the period of the film, the jacket has a cropped length of 24 inches, an iridescent burgundy lining and a striking D-pocket configuration that mirrors the first Perfecto motorcycle jacket designed by Irving Schott in 1928. The most unique elements are on the back with a hidden belt channel, side pleats and a western inspired “V” top yoke.

“From the moment I started researching for the film, Schott was front and center,” said Erin Benach, costume designer for “The Bikeriders.” “It’s exciting when an American brand that has been around since the teens is still in existence and even more exciting when the quality is still there. Motorcycle enthusiasts know their history, they know the brands that were legitimate and they know when you’ve done it right.”

“Four generations of my family have been making motorcycle jackets by hand in the USA since the 1920s,” said Jason Schott, chief operating officer and fourth generation family member at SchottNYC. “We’ve been in some of the most iconic American biker films and are honored to be featured in The Bikeriders. Using inspiration from our archives and our turn of the century machines, we created a timeless classic that feels true to the period of the 1960s, but yet modern to be worn today.”

River Road Riding Gear Now Arriving at U.S. Dealerships https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/river-road-gear-us-dealerships/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=201996 River Road's collection offers classic and modern styles with high-tech materials, featuring jackets, vests, helmets and more.

River Road’s lineup of apparel for motorcycle riders is now arriving at motorcycle dealerships in the U.S. While initially announced in Q3 2023, distribution of the River Road products took longer than planned.

Shortly after the introduction of the new line of riding gear, the River Road brand was acquired by Turn 14 Distribution. Turn 14 Distribution systems use the high standards of the automotive aftermarket (ACES and PIES), so onboarding of the distributor’s acquired and distributed brands included an upgrade to the data on product naming, tracking, fitment and describing product features. The use of these tools gives Turn 14 Distribution dealers more access to exactly the parts they need with greater efficiency for the dealership parts staff. Now with the upgrade in place for River Road, dealers have full access to all the riding gear from the latest product launch.

“We couldn’t be happier to have the new River Road line available in dealerships,” said Brent Ash, brand manager for River Road. “This product line is truly striking, with designs that are eye catching and features that meet our customer’s increasingly high demands. It’s exciting to finally get these products to riders and see them on the road.”

River Road’s new collection marks the return of the brand which launched in 1998. The products include both classic and modern-styled leather jackets and riding shirts, leather vests, gloves, chaps and helmets. This is the largest product launch ever for the River Road brand, with eight jackets styled for men and women, five styles of vests, four choices in chaps, 12 different styles of gloves and 13 helmets. All the apparel categories include products for men and women.

Many of the items are constructed using high-tech materials, such as breathable mesh fabric, Thinsulate insulation and Powerstretch gussets. Designs include plenty of pockets that snap or zip, articulated sleeves and removable liners. Prices are competitive with other brands of riding gear, while consumers will find more features and more tech in these River Road products.

River Road products are available from Turn 14 Distribution dealers around the country. The full line of River Road gear is shown on the company’s website.

Helmet Safety: Navigating the Shift Towards Rotational Protection https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/helmet-safety-navigating-shift-rotational-protection/ Thu, 16 May 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=201506 Helmet protection standards took a recent step forward in the European Union.

The post Helmet Safety: Navigating the Shift Towards Rotational Protection appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
May is upon us, and riding season is in full swing. As enthusiasts’ attention shifts towards getting out on the country’s roads, highways and tracks, this emergence from the quiet winter appropriately coincides with Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This annual engagement is spearheaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), continually urging motorists about the importance of being aware of their two-wheeled companions.

While Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month takes care to bring awareness to auto drivers, the focal point for motorcyclists is the vital importance for riders to ensure they’re properly invested in the aspects of riding they can control. That begins with the choice of safety equipment, specifically the helmet.

The harsh reality of the open road is that more than 82,000 motorcyclists are estimated to be injured in traffic crashes each year (as of 2021, according to the NHTSA1) and are disproportionately overrepresented in research involving traffic crashes and fatalities. Even more concerning, those figures continue to grow each year and are bolstered by the fact that only 66.5% of helmets in use (as of 2022, according to the NHTSA2) are in compliance with federally regulated testing standards. This figure encompasses all states, even though only 18 states require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet and an additional 29 have laws based on age. Shockingly, three states have yet to adopt any sort of helmet law. The numbers do not lie, and while no helmet, nor any other form of protection, can fully prevent injury, a helmet that not only meets the newest testing standards but is also equipped with technology with the intention to surpass those standards could be a difference maker in the event of a crash.

Related: Revolutionizing Motorcycle Safety: Enhancing Auditory Perception in Helmets

While these technologies, such as the Mips safety system, have been focused on an increase in protection for many years, helmet protection standards on a global scale took a recent step forward with the introduction of ECE 22.06, an updated testing standard for helmets manufactured in the European Union that now also addresses rotational motion. This is a first for any of the testing standards currently in the marketplace, such as the U.S.-based DOT and Snell standards, and is significant in terms of bringing attention to the rotational motion that serves as the primary cause of traumatic brain injuries, or TBI. Until ECE 22.06, helmets were required only to provide a specific level of protection for linear impacts. Unfortunately, the vast majority of motorcycle crashes result in oblique impacts, during which rotational motion can place dangerous levels of stress on the brain and can shear the delicate tissues of our most vital organ system. This can lead to different types of TBI that many are familiar with, like concussions, or severe TBI, which can be life-threatening.

How Mips works, rotational motion protection

With the implementation of ECE 22.06, helmet manufacturers will be required to offer a baseline level of rotational protection. While ECE-approved models will undoubtedly be available for consumers domestically, the standards of DOT and Snell still provide the foundation for protection in the U.S. Unfortunately, as of now, there’s no clear sign of an update of this nature to testing standards in the States for the foreseeable future.

And again, while this is a long overdue progression in helmet protection with the aim to benefit the safety of riders worldwide, it is still important to recognize that ECE 22.06 is the bare minimum when it comes to protection. The capacity for increased levels of protection still exists, and it’s within this newly established area of opportunity that helmet safety technologies become potentially invaluable.

As the world of motorcycling continues its methodical move towards embracing rotational motion protection, it’s essential to know that technology is readily available to any consumer looking to get more out of his or her helmet. One can never be faulted for taking extra steps regarding helmet safety, as trust in one’s equipment and greater peace of mind can make a significant difference in one’s comfort on the open road.
