Excelsior and Henderson were separate companies back in the early days of motorcycling. The later merging of the brand names and unfortunate debacle lead by the Hanlon Manufacturing Company, may have damaged the brand(s) beyond repair. Having lost $100M +- by selling about 1900 motorcycles for $18,500.00 each, (at a cost of $51K per unit), left all the the investors with a terrible taste. Reputations are interesting in the fact that good ones takes years to grow, bad ones can happen overnight, but takes years to forget…

What did what “guys” do to Eric Buell? I did see HD fund his genius in creating Buell the company. It seemed that HD might have utilized Buell’s designs in their current, more powerful models as well. While I, Jules Lupowitz detest abuse of giant corporate America I’m not sure if HD necessarily hurt our hero, Eric. I love all Buells, especially those “NON-HD-Based”, Rotax engine-based 1125 & 1190’s now, but it appears to me that no promises were made; it was Buell’s risk, likely known by him. HD may never had promised him to keep his line within it yet they do own his name. EBR started with HERO the largest motorcycle manufactured in the world funding that. And that apparently failed similarly, due to lack of sales.

Again I adore Buell and what he stands for, love his bikes + his accomplishments. I even hate our corrupt powerhouse in corporate America running politics like a pimp to it’s prostitutes. But if it weren’t for HD or even Hero who both tried but then terminated his funding we’d unlikely know of Buell’s or EBR’s machines at all. The company I’d love to take on Mr. Buell is Polaris! Can you imagine an Indian / EBR line?

NTHSB recalls are becoming what seems like predatory. So many these days it is paralysing industry growth. I’m all for safety for consumers but damn….
