When you think about Wisconsin, a few things may come to mind. Known as “America’s Dairyland,” the state is famous for its cheese. It’s also famous for the headquarters of the Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee, not to mention the city’s baseball team, the Milwaukee Brewers, affectionately named for the brewer. Staying in the Wisconsin sports realm, you may also think of the 2021 NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks and 2011 Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Of course, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company also calls Wisconsin home.

Nonetheless, Wisconsin’s Northern border makes up part of the Southern shoreline of the biggest Great Lake, Lake Superior. It also makes up part of the Western shoreline of Lake Michigan. Obviously, this makes a perfect setting for people to get into personal watercrafts to get out and enjoy the water. You also have plenty of forests and wildlife areas that allow powersports vehicles to thrive.

About 45 minutes northwest of Green Bay sits Shawano, Wisconsin, and that’s where you will find American Marine & Motorsports. Just under five miles west of Shawano Lake and close to lots of natural land, this powersports dealer is in a prime spot to succeed in the industry, and it’s been doing that for over three decades.

American Marine & Motorsports was founded in 1993 with just eight employees in a building on Shawano Lake. Marine products were the core of its business early on, but when Sales and Powersport Manager Brian Liebe joined the team in 1998, it didn’t take long for him to help the dealership get into the powersports space.

“I pitched the idea to the store owner of expanding into this area,” Liebe explains. “I was relieved as he said, ‘Put the plan together and make it happen!’”

The powersports side of the business began with Honda ATVs, as American Marine & Motorsports was a big Honda marine dealer. The manufacturer’s marine rep for the dealership connected Liebe with a Honda powersports rep, and the powersports business took off at the dealership.

Liebe has since brought other product lines to the dealership as it grew, totaling 38 different OEMs when you factor in all the boats, motors, trailers, docks, and lifts the dealership sells. Nine of the OEMs are powersports specific, including Honda, CF-Moto, Kayo, SSR, Piranha, Hammerhead, Vanderhall, Lifan, and Mokwheel e-bikes.

Today, American Marine & Motorsports operates with 35 employees and a 200,000-square-foot showroom stocked with hundreds of boats and around 150 powersports vehicles. The dealership still has its original location on Shawano Lake, which now has a rental department with just about any small watercraft you can imagine.

According to Liebe, side-by-sides have become the best-selling segment at American Marine & Motorsports. Two-passenger side-by-sides are the top sellers, but four- and six-passenger vehicles also sell quite well.

“Much of that is due to the growing acceptance of these machines being allowed on our public roads,” Liebe comments. “It’s nice when people can go right from their home, drive down the road in their machine, get on a trail system and travel for hundreds of miles.”

Liebe also believes this stems from families wanting to experience the outdoors after the coronavirus pandemic kept everybody inside for a long time. He says the growing size of UTVs and side-by-sides make it easy for families to get out on trails together.

With so much floor space and so many products to carry, a recent challenge American Marine & Motorsports has faced is knowing how much of a certain product to carry. Liebe says this is a two-fold issue. The first issue is uncertainty with the economy. Although this issue isn’t new, it still heavily influences sales.

“Past performance hasn’t given us enough predictable and accurate information to make good, or safe, decisions,” he says. “So, how much to stock and in what models, colors and equipment seems to be more difficult.”

The second issue is dealing with manufacturers. Liebe attributes this to poor feelings about program durations, erratic pricing with surcharges and a general lack of supplier support.

“Many of our suppliers try to load you up with inventory, and when times get tough, often after we’ve stepped up in order size, the retail programs seem to soon fade away and are not there to help the dealers get clean.”

To overcome these challenges, American Marine & Motorsports is trying to carry less inventory without making a big enough cut that it can save its way to a profit. This is because yearly sales numbers are down, but the showroom is full. Liebe says inventory is thankfully not too heavy in any particular segment, and he says the dealership is using cost effective marketing through social media to help move inventory in the slower winter months.

Lots of aspects make American Marine & Motorsports a unique dealership. For one, the aforementioned 200,000-square-foot showroom was previously a shopping center that was converted to fit the dealership’s large and diverse inventory. The variety of inventory can also be considered a unique aspect of the dealership.

However, maybe the most unique aspect of American Marine & Motorsports is its annual Boat/Powersport Show. The 2025 show will mark the 13th for the dealership. It brings between 25 and 30 vendors together – from small mom-and-pop operations to larger organizations – to sell and promote their services. This show also supports several non-profit organizations, including its longtime primary non-profit the Hands Foundation, which provides no cost help to homeless veterans.

“It’s a four-day show, providing free parking, free admission, one free food and drink item, raffle prizes each day on the hour, and products we have discounted heavily throughout the show,” Liebe says. “It’s a very special event and does so much more than focus on us.”

When it comes to driving sales for American Marine & Motorsports, pre-owned sales have been substantial. Additionally, the dealership drives sales by contacting past customers about seeing if they’re ready to trade up. Liebe says this makes it easier to generate new sales.

“We advertise that we’re buying boats and powersport items,” he notes. “We get a decent amount of inventory that way. That, in turn, helps bring people in.”

Liebe also stresses how important it is to develop trust with customers. Vehicle prices are high, and many consumers focus on price to make their purchasing decision. To develop trust, American Marine & Motorsports offers services like free oil changes, first service appointments, store account credits and more in tandem with a vehicle sale.

“Providing store services to me is much better than just dropping the price,” Liebe admits. “That way, we don’t create what I refer to as a ‘race to the bottom’ with dealers around us. When that happens, in my opinion, it creates a precedent for ongoing ‘price wars.’”

Speaking of service, American Marine & Motorsports relies quite heavily on their service department. Liebe says the selling of a vehicle is only the start of the revenue stream for the dealership. Good service is a big part of the dealership’s commitment because customers should know that the dealership is here for them every step of the way.

One way American Marine & Motorsports keeps their service department in tip-top shape is by taking lots of notes on its projects. Liebe says these notes entail every detail that could possibly help fix, diagnose or benefit the dealership with its customer. He also uses lots of notes in his sales work.

“One thing in life that I’ve learned is that you can never have too many notes,” he comments. “When you need to verify certain bits of info within the business or possibly when talking to a customer about their trade-ins or servicing items, good notes are critical to running the business.”

As American Marine & Motorsports presses on into the future, the dealership wants to fill their sales and service jobs. Positions in these two areas have been difficult to fill for a number of years, Liebe says, so retaining staff is of utmost importance.

With his extensive experience at the dealership, Liebe has seen a lot of evolution in the industry. He’s glad American Marine & Motorsports has survived it all and looks forward to the success to come.

“I’m glad we’re still privately owned and have kept a good team together to make it all these years,” says Liebe. “Our store really shines when I look at the fact that we sell ‘fun stuff’ to thousands of people each and every year.”

Family Continues at Sindt Motor Sales https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/family-continues-at-sindt-motor-sales/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 20:05:41 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203307 Learn about Sindt Motor Sales, a family-owned motorcycle and powersports dealership in Dubuque, Iowa, and their 60-plus years of history.

The post Family Continues at Sindt Motor Sales appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
When thinking of the Midwestern U.S., you probably think of a place where motorcycles can cruise along straight roads and where powersports equipment is essential for jobs and off-road fun. It’s a part of the country with rolling plains and land that is filled with agricultural crops, as well as lots of small towns.

One of those towns is Dubuque, Iowa. Officially chartered in 1837, it is the oldest city in Iowa, and it is one of the oldest settlements along the Mississippi River’s western bank. In this city full of history is where you can find Sindt Motor Sales, a motorcycle and powersports dealership that has built a history of its own.

Sindt Motor Sales

Ryan Sindt is the current owner and has worked at the dealership since he was 18. It has been family owned and operated since it opened its doors over six decades ago.

“It was started by my grandpa in 1959 and then sold to my dad and his brothers,” Sindt says. “Since then, those guys have retired and I bought it about five years ago.”

The shop has 11 employees and sells OEM rides from Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and CF Moto. Sindt says each brand sells quite similarly to one another, meaning one OEM does not significantly outsell the other.

Sindt Motor Sales

This is also apparent in the apparel Sindt sells. The dealership carries plenty of helmets, jackets and other riding gear from a number of different brands that all sell similarly to one another too.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought its fair share of challenges to Sindt Motor Sales. Many of the challenges were felt across the motorcycle and powersports industry.

“Through COVID, the biggest challenge was inventory, which everyone’s probably going to tell you,” Sindt says.

Sindt Motor Sales

However, the market has shifted since the pandemic, and Sindt says inventory is coming in at a much steadier rate from OEMs. Now, he says he mainly only faces the daily challenge of getting customers through the door. To help boost the success of this ever-constant task, Sindt Motor Sales is turning back to advertising to bring people to the dealership.

“I actually quit all advertising completely for a few years there because during COVID, I didn’t really need to have people come to the door,” Sindt explains. “I didn’t have anything to sell then anyway, so now we’ve kind of gotten back into it again.”

On top of advertising, the dealership’s longstanding presence in the Dubuque community has earned it a strong reputation. Obviously, Sindt Motor Sales’ six plus decades of selling motorcycles and powersports vehicles makes them a unique dealer. As mentioned before, the dealership was started in 1959. It has been in the same location since 1971 after Sindt’s family built its current building.

With that many years in the business, Sindt has collected a lot of bikes from different generations. They are showpieces for customers to admire when they enter the dealership.

“I’ve got a big upper deck shelf around the showroom that has all vintage restored motorcycles on it. It’s kind of cool,” he admits. “A lot of people come in and browse around with that stuff, especially the older crowd.”

Speaking of older rides, Sindt Motor Sales does carry used motorcycles and powersports vehicles. They aren’t old enough to be collector items yet, but they are in great shape and are a big business driver for Sindt.

“Pre-owned always does well for us,” he says. “I don’t have a lot of pre-owned stuff on hand because I turn it over quickly.”

Sindt Motor Sales

Sindt’s pre-owned inventory includes more than just the new OEM vehicles that he sells. He has sold anything from used Triumphs to Can-Am Spyders at the dealership. Having the diverse selection of rides also means Sindt Motor Sales’ service department can work on many different rides.

“The service department has got to be the busiest department year-round for sure,” he says. “We’re in a farm community, so we do a lot of four-wheelers and side-by-sides too. In the repair shop, that segment keeps them really busy.”

For the powersports equipment that is used for farming, Sindt says a lot of the jobs the service department works on are repairing drivelines and axles on ATVs and side-by-sides. The tough terrain of the farmland typically takes a heavy toll on those parts of the vehicles.

Sindt Motor Sales

Sindt Motor Sales’ service department has a manager and three full-time technicians that do all the repair work coming into the dealership. If there is one tip Sindt has for motorcycle and powersports dealerships, it is to have a good service manager. He says a good service manager can really help hold a dealership together.

As Sindt Motor Sales carries its decades of history into the future, Sindt wants to continue updating the technology in the dealership. Recently, he just switched DMS systems from Lightspeed to DX1.

“We’ve been on a DMS operating system for a long time now,” he says. “DX1 is a lot different compared to Lightspeed, but I like it.”

Sindt Motor Sales

Other recent technology upgrades at Sindt Motor Sales include a new phone service and a new alarm service.

The dealership also wants to constantly keep updating its inventory, as do all motorcycle and powersports dealerships. As mentioned before, Sindt Motor Sales has no problem getting inventory on their showroom floor anymore. Check out the dealership’s website, and you’ll see all the cool motorcycles and powersport vehicles they have to offer.

Nearing its 70th anniversary in just five years, Sindt Motor Sales is looking to add more to its longstanding history in the motorcycle and powersports industry. The dealership is more than ready and willing to continue cementing its legacy in Dubuque, with the Sindt family name on its sign for generations to come.

monimoto-9-feature

The Monimoto 9 is a dust- and water-resistant unit designed for the needs of ATV/side-by-side owners. The small size and extra durability make it a perfect means of delivering peace of mind to off-road fans.

Monimoto 9 is the next generation of the company’s high performance security tracking products, which uses both cellular signals and GPS tracking capabilities to deliver real-time location data on vehicles and equipment protected by the device.

Monimoto’s proven technology uses a key fob to automatically activate the system when the fob moves away from the tracking device. If the tracking device senses movement, the system immediately notifies the owner via a phone call. At that point, the Monimoto app provides detailed location data that can be shared with authorities to avoid a theft or facilitate a quick return of the vehicle or protected equipment.

The Monimoto 9 is easily hidden, as it weighs only 6 ounces with a form factor of 1.5-by-3.5 inches. Since it is battery powered, it does not require wiring to the vehicle and will not drain the vehicle’s battery over time.

]]>
Can-Am is pushing the boundaries of performance with the groundbreaking Outlander lineup of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and the next evolution of performance side-by-sides vehicles (SSV) with the Maverick R Max. The Outlander 850 and 1000R take the ATV riding experience to new heights with industry-leading horsepower, increased suspension travel, refined handling and unmistakable Can-Am design. The Maverick R Max builds upon the success of the Maverick R platform with a new four-seat configuration that allows riders to share the thrill and adventure with family and friends.

“At its core, Can-Am is a brand that is all about pushing the envelope and creating the ultimate experience for every type of rider, from ranchers to outdoor enthusiasts and racers,” said Julie Tourville, director, global marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. “Producing over 100 horsepower and touting unmatched suspension, handling, design and technology, the new Outlander models are in a league of their own. We are also continuing to blaze the trail in the SSV category with the introduction of the Maverick R Max. From adding brawn to your workday to conquering the desert to playing in the mud, the Can-Am lineup of ATVs and SSVs is built to do it all.”

2025 Can-Am Outlander 850 and 1000R

2025 Can-Am Outlander 850
2025 Can-Am Outlander 850

Engine

This platform pushes peak performance over the top, with a new Rotax engine, giving it industry-leading horsepower and performance. The double-overhead camshaft 999cc V-twin utilizes a high compression ratio with a high-efficiency intake and exhaust, making the Outlander 1000R the first ATV with triple-digit horsepower, at 101 horsepower. The new 1000R boasts the fastest acceleration in the industry. The Outlander 850 also offers impressive power, producing 82 horsepower. Both models include Work, Standard and Sport ride modes, optimizing power delivery and performance for the task at hand.

Transmission

The Outlander 850 and 1000R are equipped with an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) that delivers smooth power to the ground, consistent shifts, improves torque and reduces maintenance requirements. The latest pDrive primary clutch is paired with a new, dual-roller-driven pulley, offering instant response and rock-solid reliability.

Chassis and Suspension

More power and higher speeds require greater suspension and handling capability. Designed for ultimate comfort and stability, the Outlander features a new suspension configuration with wide, arched A-arms front and rear, allowing for enhanced vehicle dynamics, including an improved attack angle for smooth obstacle and ditch crossing. Front suspension travel has increased by 1.6 inches to 10.8 inches, while rear suspension has increased by 2.1 inches to 12 inches of travel, offering superior performance and comfort, along with additional ground clearance to crawl over any obstacle on the trail.

Complementing the updated suspension, the steering geometry is also revised, increasing high-speed stability, steering precision and turning radius. A high-strength steel frame enhances durability and rigidity while decreasing weight. The full-length skidplate provides heavy-duty protection.

The 1000R and X mr versions feature a new four-disc system for ultimate braking control. The braking system now offers greater capacity and modulation thanks in part to new metallic brake pads and a new front brake lever with optimized ergonomics.

When it comes to work, the Outlander continues to impress with a class-leading towing capacity of 1,830 pounds and a heavy-duty 2-inch hitch receiver.

Design and Technology

For riders who call mudholes their playground, the Outlander X mr 850 and 1000R are the ultimate purpose-built machines. Ensuring maximum traction in challenging conditions, the Outlander X mr models feature new 30-inch XPS Swamp King XL tires, developed specifically for this machine. An aluminum handlebar with a 1-inch riser facilitates optimal riding position, while the J-hook and mud strap offer higher leverage points for vehicle recovery, a feature that is exclusive to the Outlander 1000R X mr. The reinforced, LinQ-compatible rear rack features integrated grab handles that can be used to help riders get out of tough spots.
