Custom 1979 Yamaha SR500 Cafe Racer https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/custom-1979-yamaha-sr500-cafe-racer/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 16:22:31 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=194770 This Italian-styled cafe racer has hardly an original bolt on it. Check out the awesome upgrades owner Spero Floro made to this 1979 Yamaha SR500!

In a sea full of choppers and cruisers at Fuel Cleveland, it was nice to find a few café racers out under the sun at the historic Hale Farm. One of those was a fully restored and customized Yamaha café racer brought to the show by Sane Motion Moto owner, Spero Floro.

Floro is a truck and trailer mechanic by trade, and while he’s been an avid motorcyclist for most of his life, this build is his first endeavor. The bike is a 1979 Yamaha SR500 base, although there’s hardly an original bolt left on it.

“I started by cutting the steering tube off of it, because it was set at 28 degrees,” Floro says. “Then, I built my own to fit the 1996 GSXR 600 front end on it. I changed the geometry from 28 to 25 degrees to make a steeper angle and have it be a little more sporty with quicker turning.

“I also rebuilt the front forks on it with Race Tech springs emulators, so the front end works really well. It has custom-made wheels from Cognito Moto with Warp 9 wheels and double disc brakes. It stops on a dime.”

Floro also lifted the rear section of the frame 6 degrees, fabricated a seat cowl out of aluminum, and had the seat made by Haversack Leather. The engine was completely rebuilt as well with high-compression pistons, resurfaced rockers, an aftermarket cam, and a ported-and-polished head. The engine now has a displacement of 535cc and is matched to a custom Lectron carburetor and stainless-steel exhaust. The heavily modified tank comes from a Benelli Mojave.

“The Lectron carburetor is amazing, it’s very progressive on the acceleration,” Floro notes. “I used to run a 41mm flat slide carb in there, but it was too much for the bike. When I hit the throttle, I couldn’t even keep the front end on the ground.“

As for the fabrication work that went into the build, Floro bent all the pipes and tubing for the frame himself. The rear fender, front headlight brackets, etc. were all machined by hand on a milling machine. The craftsmanship is so fine that you would be hard pressed to think this was Floro’s first time doing any sort of fabrication work – even though it was.

The SR500 also sports a few parts that set Floro’s Yamaha apart from the crowd. It has MessnerMoto mirrors, switches and a throttle assembly, all which were machined and manufactured in Italy. Floro says that his business, Sane Motion Moto, is the only business distributing those products in North America. The foot pegs and air filters can also be found on his website.

In terms of the styling, Floro says he went for an Italian look with the color scheme. He visited a paint shop and after about an hour of putting drops of paint together, he settled on the pistachio green that was a close match.

The bike itself is rather light, weighing only 340 lbs. compared to the original 425-lb. weight. Paired with the upgraded engine, Floro’s Yamaha makes for a rather quick ride, but he’s more than happy to just cruise down city streets.

Spero Floro of Sane Motion Moto is no stranger to motorcycles and parts, but when it comes to building a bike from scratch, this 1979 Yamaha cafe racer was his first stab at it. Featuring a custom frame, custom exhaust and a bunch of unique touches only Spero could do himself, we have to say this bike turned out great. It’s our Ride of the Week!

This BMW R100 springer cafe racer named “Survivor” is the first unit of a limited edition of 10 units that Lord Drake Kustoms owner Francisco (Fran) Manen has begun to manufacture. The custom build has left fans of the BMW cafe racer motorcycles speechless.

The idea was to create a piece of art on two wheels, and above all, a custom BMW R that had not been seen to date. We think it’s safe to say Manen has accomplished that feat with this build. The BMW R project was originally one that Manen planned to build in his cafe racer workshop in Miami. However, due to COVID-19, he decided to develop the project in Lord Drake Kustoms’ (LDK) second location in Málaga, Spain.

In the world of custom motorcycles, the BMW R100 series are possibly the most demanded and customized cafe racer motorcycles in recent years, but if you look at the end, they all have the same patterns – and almost none of these BMW Rs have a springer front end.

After several months investigating, Manen started from the front end and the most radical way in a BMW R was to install a springer fork (something that has practically not been seen to date in any BMW R cafe racer or scrambler) accompanied by a drum brake rim for a more classic touch.

The other great challenge and perhaps the most difficult thing in this cafe racer motorcycle with a very retro air, has been to create another rear suspension system and for this, the swingarm was modified, the subframe was eliminated and the chassis was modified, so that two shock absorbers could be installed under the seat.

The bike also features a clean handlebar without buttons with inverted levers, a Motogadget Speedometer and a very original and totally unique button panel. Another challenge Manen faced was with modifying the cafe racer fuel tank to adapt it to the chassis and then create an electrical installation that is as hidden as possible.

The bobber-type leaf spring seat support, the button panel located in front of the gas tank, the license plate holder, the battery box, air filter, the exhaust, and the rear fender have all been handmade entirely by Lord Drake Kustoms. Brown leather, white powder paint and chrome plating combined with antiqued brass plating parts have colored this impressive BMW with springer fork.

The bike is powered by a 1,000cc engine with a stock transmission. The front and rear wheels are 19″ and 18″, respectively. Other modifications include the handlebar, cables inside the handlebar, inverted levers, grips, footrests, spark plug wires, spark plug covers, and more.

The bike pictured is the first unit built from a limited edition of 10 units that Lord Drake Kustoms has put on sale and has since sold to a customer in Brazil. Units 2 and 3 are already sold and under construction for clients in Madrid and Dubai, but units 4 through 10 are still available to be ordered and shipped worldwide. See the bike up close in the video below!

Over on the Return of the Cafe Racer’s, blogger Geoff Baldwin writes about Custom Creations’ founder Danilo Biello’s latest project that celebrates the shop’s 10th anniversary. The custom cafe racer is based on a 1996 BMW R100R they have named ‘The Rise’ after one of Danilo’s loyal customers.

“Benedetto is the owner of the R100R. He’s not only one of my best clients, but he’s also a good friend, a motorcycle collector and directly involved in our workshop marketing, events and social communication,” says Danilo. “He wanted an R100R that was collecting dust in his garage to be the best custom BMW we were able to imagine.”

The Custom Creations team used CAD modeling and CNC milling to great effect, making some gorgeous one-off components from scratch. They had to dig deep and employ all of their talents to realize Benedetto’s challenging request.

When a Customer Needs Classic Bike Parts, Dealers Often End Up Here And  Discover More

Want to increase your number of happy customers? Train your people NOT to say, “We don’t stock that,” when someone comes in wanting fork tubes for a 1969 Honda CB 350 or an oil filter for a 1975 Norton Commando. What they SHOULD say is, “I’ll look it up in the EMGO catalog.” Very often, the part will be there, and, instead of having an angry would-be customer storming out your door, you will have a pleased actual customer listening attentively as your parts person explains the special-order policy. Much better for community relations, good vibrations and your bottom line. “Let your dealers know that you can make big money with our products,” says Emil Gomez, EMGO’s CEO.

EMGO’s USA-based staff travels through Asia (Taiwan, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.) working with quality manufacturers and inspecting the quality, packaging and shipment of the company’s products.

Making that one person happy can result in additional wear on your front door hinges. Most people with the classic bike bug congregate with others sharing their predilections, and if one old bike enthusiast gets what they need at your place, very often several others will soon appear without you needing to do any advertising at all. While your new customers are getting their special part ordered, they may decide they need oil, a pair of gloves and a drive chain.

Want to sell more new bikes? Vintage hobbyists almost always own a new bike to ride when they get tired of sorting out the wiring on the Moto Guzzi Ambassador. If you get them the parts they need for the old bike, they will like you, and if they like you, they will be more likely to buy that new bike from you − and so will their friends.

New for EMGO in 2015 is this catalog for oil and air filters, oil lines and filter wrenches. They also published a new catlog for ATV parts.

EMGO stocks sprockets, mufflers, levers, brakes, oil, air and fuel filters for most bikes, old and new, from Aprilias and BSA’s to Victory’s and Yamahas, as well as for personal watercraft, ATV’s and snowmobiles. The company offers custom mirrors, classic twistgrips, and fork gaiters for Harleys and Hondas, fenders for Kawasakis, and cables for a huge variety of two-wheeled transport. “We have about 15,000 part numbers,” says Emil Gomez. “We sell aftermarket parts for Harleys, Japanese motorcycles and European motorcycles. The parts we sell are driven by retailer input. If we find there is demand for a particular part, we will obtain an OEM part and reverse engineer it.”

EMGO stocks sprockets, mufflers, levers, brakes, oil, air and fuel filters for most bikes,
old and new, from Aprilias and BSAs to Victorys and Yamahas, as well as for personal watercraft, ATVs and snowmobiles.

EMGO works with several Taiwanese factories and imports their output to the USA and, increasingly, all over the world. The company name derives from the first two letters of the first and last name of the CEO, who worked at and then purchased the import motorcycle division over 50 years ago from an international trading company. About 10 years ago, the company started a catalog specifically for classic bikes. “It has been a boom for us,” says Gomez. Recent additions have been foam air filters for dirt bikes and ATVs, locking gas caps for 1980s Kawasakis, stators for Honda 400 Fours, and replica Lucas headlights for classic British motorcycles.

The company will happily send dealers EMGO catalogs to have on hand for customers to look at, although all sales are through distributors to dealers. The EMGO catalogs can also be easily accessed online. “If you don’t see it in one of the catalogs, email us and ask.”

The Current Crop of EMGO Catalogs
New for 2015, is EMGO’s catalog of oil and air filters, oil lines and filter wrenches. Remember that if someone is buying an oil filter from you, they are probably also going to want to buy oil – an opportunity to up sell.

Also new for 2015, an entire catalog of parts and accessories for ATVs.
The controls catalog, featuring footpegs, grips, handlebars, forged shift levers, throttles, brackets and similar items. Your customers can customize their rides without spending an arm and a leg, and may even ask you to install
the parts for them.

The sprocket catalog, with a complete list of sprockets for on and off-road bikes and ATVs. EMGO has sprockets to fit exotic bikes like Derbi, Gas-Gas, Gilera, and MuZ, as well as all common brands. Many of your customers are taking up vintage off-roading or racing, and will want to know that you can get them sprockets for their bikes.

The muffler catalog. Mufflers are one of the first things to rust out on old bikes, and finding factory originals is often impossible. A high-quality EMGO muffler set will get that older machine back on the road. EMGO sells mufflers for classic British bikes and Harley-Davidsons, as well as universal mufflers that fit a variety of makes. There are also a wide selection of cafe racer mufflers in the catalog, a look tha t is now very popular among younger riders.

The mirror catalog. EMGO is known for its aftermarket mirrors. As you know, mirrors are often the first thing to break in minor mishaps. Make someone’s day by finding them a replacement for that cracked mirror.

The vintage and cafe racer catalog. Clutch springs for a BSA? Classic split-lens goggles? Side stands for a Kawasaki Z-1? It’s all here.

A challenge has been the perception of a percentage of the public that Taiwanese factories produce inferior products. “The perception of inferior quality has moved over to products from Mainland China,” says Emil. “Our factories have overcome that perception with constant development. They go out of their way to improve. We get compliments that the quality of our parts is better than original.” Emil points out that his USA-based staff travels through Asia (Taiwan, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.) working with quality manufacturers and inspecting the quality, packaging and shipment of the company’s products.

EMGO is a supplier to OEM accounts and major private label companies in addition to the EMGO brand sold via wholesale distributors worldwide.

Online retailers stock some of the more popular EMGO products, and the reviews are uniformly positive. For example, 100 percent of respondents to one online forum would recommend EMGO’s universal motorcycle travel trunk. “Secure and reliable” is a typical comment.

Emil sees no end in consumer’s interest in classic motorcycles. “We have many more foreign buyers around the world. Currently, EMGO has customers in more than 35 countries. Cafe racing has taken off in the last two years, and is still growing. Small cafe racers based around older Hondas are especially popular.”
