In addition to the incredible riding experience the Can-Am Pulse and Origin offers, one of our core advantages is our extensive global dealer network that will be selling and servicing Can-Am motorcycles. We can’t wait to start getting these bikes in the hands of riders all over the world.”

Dust Moto Unveils All-Electric Dirt Bike: Hightail https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/dust-moto-unveils-all-electric-dirt-bike-hightail/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 14:01:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203864 A fully refundable $100 deposit reserves the ride that redefines approachable performance on two wheels.

The post Dust Moto Unveils All-Electric Dirt Bike: Hightail appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
Dust Moto has introduced the all-electric Hightail — punching above its weight class with 42 horsepower and 660 newton-meters of torque in a svelte sub-100-kilogram package. The dirt bike delivers a radically simplified user experience, compact chassis, swappable 4.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack and whisper-quiet drivetrain delivering peak riding enjoyment for more riders across more terrains.

“Teaching people to ride an electric dirt bike is easier; they pick it up more quickly, and without the noise, a lot more riding opportunities become available,” said Colin Godby, founder and CEO of Dust Moto. “But the benefits of electric aren’t only for new riders. Suddenly, backyard tracks, urban areas and natural sites with noise restrictions become accessible to riders that weren’t available with gas-powered bikes. The unrivaled agility and lack of maintenance means more time spent with a smile plastered across your face. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here — just amplify the experience for more people via the benefits of electric.”

Hightail — Designed and Built for Fun

Founded in 2023, Dust Moto has developed the Hightail in partnership with Bloom, a Detroit-based manufacturing platform focused on electric vehicles. The collaboration is intended to bring Dust Moto’s vision to fruition within the U.S., supporting domestic craftsmanship and production. The partnership gives Dust unprecedented access to new capacities for domestic manufacturing, assembly, delivery and servicing in Michigan, cementing Dust Moto’s commitment to be designed and built in America.

The Hightail delivers features designed for performance and longevity equipped with a swappable 4.4-kilowatt-hour battery, 42 horsepower and 660 newton-meters of torque, offering riders up to two hours of continuous riding, or approximately 35 miles ridden hard on a single charge. The bike’s light weight ( under 100 kilograms) and compact design (2-inch shorter wheelbase/less seat height than an average 250cc bike) increases maneuverability, creating a unique power to weight ratio that’s nimble, responsive and has been described as “telepathic” to rider inputs. With a 55-decibel quiet (about the volume of a typical conversation voice) custom electric drivetrain, more riding locations become possible while the bike’s maintenance schedule is radically simplified. Overall, Dust Moto envisions a riding experience that is far more immersive with the rider’s surroundings, enabling a stronger connection with the bike and other riders, aiming to create the ultimate fun machine.

Pricing and Availability

In keeping with the company’s commitment to transparency, Dust Moto has taken an unconventional “build in public” approach, allowing backers and followers to view the design and engineering process firsthand. This model has cultivated a community of passionate riders who are engaged not only in the end product but in the development journey itself.

The Hightail (known previously as Model_1) is priced at $10,950 USD and is now available for pre-order in the U.S. with a $100 refundable deposit, with initial deliveries set for late 2025. For more information on the Hightail and Dust Moto’s mission to introduce sustainable options to the power sports industry, visit dustmoto.com.

Beam Global Launches BeamPatrol Transportable Off-Grid Law Enforcement Electric Motorcycle, Charging Bundle https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/beampatrol-law-enforcement-electric-motorcycle/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 16:55:43 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203812 Solution provides safety and law enforcement personnel access to stealth electric motorcycles, motorcycle charging and off-grid emergency power.

The post Beam Global Launches BeamPatrol Transportable Off-Grid Law Enforcement Electric Motorcycle, Charging Bundle appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
Beam Global announced the official launch of the BeamPatrol law enforcement electric motorcycle and charging product bundle. The off-grid charging station is a turnkey solution powered by 100% renewable energy and equipped with four chargers and four electric motorcycles from Zero Motorcycles. This new resource provides a solution that is self-contained and ready to operate, allowing first responders and security personnel to concentrate on their challenging work aided by the latest mobility technology without having to worry about infrastructure or integration.

Rapidly deployed and easily transported, the BeamPatrol station allows law enforcement and safety personnel to charge and quickly access nimble, quiet and responsive motorcycles without the need for any additional infrastructure or fuel. This innovative solution is ideal for law enforcement, customs and border patrol, the military, park services, air and seaport operations and any situation where the ability to rapidly gain access to an environment, without alerting targets of the operation, is required. BeamPatrol and the motorcycles it supports generate low to no maintenance or fuel costs and provide a highly reliable mobility solution while assisting in the carbon reduction efforts of the agencies that use the product.

Based on Beam Global’s patented EV ARC product line, the BeamPatrol station deploys in minutes with no construction, no electrical work and no utility bill, making it an efficient and cost-effective solution for agencies. The BeamPatrol e-motorcycle charger generates and stores its own clean electricity and can continue to charge during the hours of darkness, inclement weather and grid outages thanks to its onboard battery storage. Transportable but permanent, the BeamPatrol station can be placed in challenging or typical environments and relocated as first responder demands change.

“Motorcycles can be highly effective law enforcement assets,” said Chief Stephen Willis, a law enforcement veteran with over 40 years of leadership roles, including police chief, across 10 departments, who consulted on the development of the product. “As departments try to do more with less, having a motorcycle and charging infrastructure product bundle which reduces maintenance and fuel costs and requires no project management or integration should provide great value to police departments and other law enforcement agencies. Electric motorcycles are fast and quiet, allowing officers to approach suspects without alerting them. As a law enforcement professional, I can see a great deal of value in a product like the BeamPatrol.”

“The EV ARC product platform is incredibly versatile because it can be adapted to create targeted solutions that address real-world challenges for a variety of audiences,” said Desmond Wheatley, CEO of Beam Global. “In the case of law enforcement, our customers have expressed a need for bundled solutions which require little or no integration and are capable of maintaining operations during emergencies, like grid outages, while also providing reliable mobility for patrols and rapid responses. BeamPatrol stations give them a holistic and turnkey product that combines renewable charging and energy storage with electric motorcycles from top quality manufacturers like Zero Motorcycles, a high-quality brand already in use for these applications. We’re equipping law enforcement and safety personnel with the resources they need to enhance their jobs.”

A report by RTI International, Police Executive Research Forum for the National Institute of Justice concluded that many police departments are implementing technologies to increase efficiency and to improve outcomes, especially in times of diminished resources and enhanced public attention to, and scrutiny of, law enforcement tactics and outcomes. It is also estimated that 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2025, according to a 2018 United Nations Report. This rapid urbanization presents significant challenges for law enforcement, as police resources are being stretched thin in increasingly populated areas and the demand for effective public safety measures becomes even more critical.

Royal Enfield Launches Flying Flea, New Electric Vehicle Brand https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/royal-enfield-launches-new-ev-brand/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203766 Flying Flea, the new EV brand from Royal Enfield, introduces all-new electric mobility solutions for city-plus space.

The post Royal Enfield Launches Flying Flea, New Electric Vehicle Brand appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
Marking a major milestone in the company’s more than 123 years of history, Royal Enfield has entered the EV space by announcing the launch of its completely new electric vehicle brand: Flying Flea. The expression of Royal Enfield’s commitment to keep moving forever forward, this new brand of electric vehicles continues a legacy of innovation and builds a unique and exciting range of urban and city-plus motorcycles for the global electric motorcycle marketplace and beyond.

This new Flying Flea brand takes inspiration from the original Royal Enfield Flying Flea motorcycle of the 1940’s, a landmark in automotive engineering and design. Though it was purpose-built for use during World War II when these amazing machines were airdropped via parachute to provide lightweight, easy-to-use all-terrain mobility, it was later embraced by civilians too for city exploration purposes. This lightness, agility and adaptability returns with the Flying Flea brand and its upcoming range of electric vehicles.

Speaking about what Royal Enfield brings to the Flying Flea and to electric mobility, Siddhartha Lal, managing director, Eicher Motors Ltd., said, “Ever since the wheels began turning in 1901, Royal Enfield has been an ally for exploration and pure motorcycling experiences for millions of riders. For more than 123 years now, as Royal Enfield has evolved with time, emerged through challenges and grown to be a global motorcycling brand, our mission of pure motorcycling has been preserved and nurtured, and has become our true north. Today, as we get ready to script a new chapter for Royal Enfield, this mission has been the driving force and inspiration and is the link between Royal Enfield and the Flying Flea, our new brand for super fun, gorgeous and enjoyable urban-plus mobility. This is a significant step in our evolution as a brand and an opportunity for us to distill the essence of Royal Enfield DNA combined with all the great benefits of EV technology and bring something absolutely delightful and differentiated to the world of city-plus mobility.”

Announcing the creation of the brand and showcasing of its first two models at the global launch event in Milan ahead of EICMA, B Govindarajan, CEO of Royal Enfield, added, “It is an especially exciting moment for us as we present the new Flying Flea brand at EICMA. This represents a completely new chapter for Royal Enfield, inspired by our legacy, driven by our vision for the future and an outcome of rebalance, our approach to business. Flying Flea combines distinctive style, city-focused practicality and cutting-edge technology. This is the start of a fresh, sustainable ride for us and offers the world an elegant, effective and sustainable everyday transportation. We’ve been deeply investing in R&D and infrastructure for EV over the last many years, and have built a world-class team including 200+ engineers in India and the UK. We have also initiated the development of an EV manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. We have invested in Barcelona-based Stark Future known for its advanced off-road electric motorcycles. All aspects of our connected electric motorcycles, including product strategy and development, technical components like motor, battery, BMS, custom software and our retail and market strategy have been developed in-house by our dedicated technical and commercial teams.”

Speaking specifically about the brand launch and models unveiled at the launch event, Mario Alvisi, chief growth officer of electric vehicles for Royal Enfield, said, “Flying Flea is not just a new division but a completely fresh start in every respect; when we say this is a city-plus platform, this is to say Flying Flea allows riders to break free to and from the city with a truly moving and visceral riding experience. This is much more than a new brand from Royal Enfield — this is a whole new approach from the brand. We have worked tirelessly to assemble a world-class team and culture, invested in a groundbreaking infrastructure, class-leading technology and have formed both the brand and products from a blank sheet of paper. With no carryover, no crossover and no cutting of corners, the end result is products unlike any other in the market. These products not only offer a sophisticated mix between authentic design and cutting-edge technology but are purpose-built for a whole new space. Flying Flea is for those who will not accept compromises in design and functionality, who seek technology that heightens their experiences and value ease of operation, ownership and, above all, enjoyment.”

The first model under Flying Flea to hit the road next year will be the FF-C6. Taking inspiration from the original Flying Flea model, this is a modern interpretation with a sophisticated, distinct aesthetic coupled with class-leading technology. This will be the first motorcycle to bring to life the core pillars of the Flying Flea brand:

 • Authentic retro-futuristic style: The authentic and unmistakable design is highlighted by the first-of-its-kind contemporary reimagining of the original Flying Flea front suspension, featuring a forged aluminum girder fork and articulating mudguard. This fork style was synonymous with pre-1930s motorcycles, and the original Flying Flea notably elevated this style with an elegant “rubber band” style girder fork. This focal point of an already distinctive design is not only carried forward with the new Flying Flea but reinvented and completely modernized, a ground-up redesign of which results in a unique riding experience only available on the FF-C6. The flowing forged aluminum frame provides a lightweight yet strong structure with a timeless silhouette, while the magnesium battery case utilizes organic design language for optimal weight saving and cooling. The design theme of the battery fins is emblematic of the Flying Flea’s ethos, fusing tradition and technology. The dynamic front fins, arranged in odd sequences, represent innovation and modern technology while the elegant rear fins, placed in even sequences, embody tradition and legacy. Both clusters of fins twist and turn, eventually merging seamlessly into a graceful wing-shaped motif at the center. A true round touchscreen cluster maintains classic lines alongside high-tech functionality.
 • Cutting Edge Technology: Cutting-edge connected features utilize a myriad of native technologies for a seamless experience both on and off the bike — 28 patents have been filed in the last six months alone, with further advancements coming by the day. Bespoke software, developed in-house, constantly monitors and optimizes the riding experience, from improving mileage to creating a captivating riding feel. To leverage the full capabilities of the FF-C6, a central Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) was developed which integrates all the physical and digital touch points powered by a tailor-made chip made specifically for FF. This VCU enables over 200,000 different ride mode combinations, constantly monitors your bike when you are away to alert if it is disturbed or moved and is always up to date with over-the-air updates and feature additions. The ride modes allow the user to tailor their experience not just for economy or comfort but for sheer enjoyment through nuanced adjustments to throttle, brake and regen feel — allowing your bike to change as your mood, your roads and your needs do. The phone as a key technology allows you to simply jump on and ride away.
 • Accessible and Exciting Riding Experience: Effortless twist-and-go visceral acceleration creates an intoxicating mix of pace and fun with lean angle sensing ABS, alongside efficient and capable highway cruising with cruise control. Easy and fast charging at a domestic three-pin plug coupled with ample range to explore your city. Easy handling paired with lightweight components result in an infinitely usable, uncomplicated and encouraging ride regardless of your ability.

With these underlying core pillars, Flying Flea will allow riders to move within and around the city in a sustainable way, connecting both with technology and your surroundings. This is the beginning of a new breed of electric mobility for those who choose to travel with style, with purpose and for fun as well as necessity.

2025 KTM FREERIDE E https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/2025-ktm-freeride-e/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203531 Bringing new energy to KTM e-mobility.

The post 2025 KTM FREERIDE E appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.

]]>
Ten years after KTM first introduced the electric Freeride concept to the market, the completely refreshed 2025 KTM FREERIDE E represents the company’s next step in its approach to the liberty, practicality and vast potential of dual-sport e-mobility.

The 2025 KTM FREERIDE E is a 99% new product featuring an in-house-developed drivetrain, expanded battery potential and high-class components wrapped with unforgettable style and design that always distinguishes orange motorcycles from the crowd.

KTM treasures the virtues of the platform: The KTM FREERIDE E tackles not only some of the environmental issues with off-roading (low emissions and near silent noise, which means it can be ridden almost anywhere) but also the benefits of low maintenance. Better still, the 2025 KTM FREERIDE E is street-legal, meaning a new world of riding opportunities, off-road or on, have been opened up.

The bike provides the thrill of instant torque and power, and a setup with both brakes mounted on the handlebars will allow experienced users to work more on their technique and positioning while being the easiest possible introduction to the awesomeness of riding for newcomers.

Back in 2014, KTM unveiled the KTM FREERIDE E in enduro form. A decade later, technology has advanced, hardware is better and lighter, and software has become cleverer. Into this setting comes the latest expression of the KTM FREERIDE E, showing that KTM rigorously believes in the power and possibilities of battery power. The 2025 KTM FREERIDE E is a natural progression from the superb roster of new KTM SX-E 2 and KTM SX-E 5 e-minis, which forms the ideal learning stage for future riders.

So, what’s new?

KTM’s research and development (R&D) department has been busy bringing the most exciting interpretation of electric drivetrain technology to the KTM FREERIDE E platform. Boasting 11 kilowatts of nominal output, 18.5 kilowatts peak power, more than 37 newton meters of torque and a top speed of 59 mph (95 km/h), the engine is a much quieter, cooler unit that is water- and dustproof and fully integrated into the overall character and feel of the motorcycle. Three ride modes (ECO, NORMAL and SPORT) and three energy recuperation settings (OFF, MID and HIGH) can be synced to ensure flexibility with the range and power package of the KTM FREERIDE E. Traction control can also be pegged to a certain level to limit or increase wheelspin. More safety features come from the “rollover sensor” that cuts the power in the event of a crash.

KTM prioritized nimble and light handling and developed a new chassis. The geometry has been altered, and the wheelbase widened for more stability and comfort. The chassis can remain featherweight and slim by hinging the chrome-molybdenum steel frame on the load-bearing engine and battery architecture. Expect the final ride-ready weight to be less than 251 pounds (114 kilograms), and the aluminum and glass-fiber reinforced nylon subframe helps in this respect. The KTM FREERIDE E’s seat height is 35.6 inches (906 millimeters).

The 63.9-pound (29-kilogram) MX50 lithium-ion battery has been tested and proven in the most extreme conditions. It has been constructed in a way that means it is interchangeable, allowing the use of a second pack while the charging process takes place or to increase travel use. The capacity is 5 kilowatt-hours, an improvement of 1 kilowatt-hour compared to the previous KTM FREERIDE E and 20% more riding time or distance. Battery life can withstand over 1,000 charge cycles before dipping to 80% effectiveness. Typical enduro riding time is estimated to be between two and three hours.

The KTM FREERIDE E comes with a 660-watt charger and will complete a full charge in eight hours with a normal household supply. A 20% to 80% rate can be reached in four to five hours.

Robust and dependable handling is achieved with the latest generation of WP Suspension. The front-end is reactive but also planted when required, thanks to light 43-millimeter WP XACT split design forks, with the air capsule in the left unit and the oil damping system in the right. Adjustment is easily made with the single air pressure valve and supplied air pump for preload and clickers for compression and rebound.

The brand-new design of the WP XPLOR PDS system provides 250 millimeters of travel on the rear. Oil flow has been optimized for a more consistent damping feeling from the 374-millimeter shock. New bearing seals have enlarged service intervals. The WP XPLOR PDS comes with adjustable clickers for tool-less alterations on the fly.

KTM is fully charged for the future phases of e-mobility to get youngsters rolling with their first ride on two-wheels and to sharpen their skills to the point where a “READY TO RACE” mentality becomes a way of life.

The foundational step has been polished, and the new 2025 KTM SX-E 5 mini cross motorcycle represents a benchmark in the industry for the commitment to quality. The KTM SX-E 5 might enable hours of fun, learning and stimulate the early flow of adrenaline, but these bikes are not “toys.” This is the start of a new era for the next generation of riders and racers.

Here are six ways in which KTM is plugging in to play with the 2025 KTM SX-E 5.

Drivetrain Development

For 2025, the KTM SX-E 5 has a super-advanced, fully electric, water-cooled permanent magnet motor that provides 30% more riding time compared to the previous version and peak power at 5 kilowatts. The unit is dust- and waterproof, which makes it low wearing and maintenance-free, while the integrated engine control unit (ECU) guarantees a direct but very controllable power delivery. The surge is good enough to guarantee exhilaration for youngsters; however, it also packs enough to satisfy the demands for racing. In short, it’s a high-quality and real-world “READY TO RACE” alternative to the petrol-powered 50cc engine. A multifunctional instrument display shows the state and charge level of the battery, in addition to one of the six different ride maps that administer how strong and fast the potency of the drivetrain feeds through the throttle.

Frame Finesse: ‘Go as You Grow’

One of the best features of the KTM SX-E 5 is the adjustable dimensions of the bike. The subframe is made of lightweight, fiberglass reinforced plastic elements, which can be mounted in different positions to suit the changing size of the junior rider. The variance window is 24.9 to 26.8 inches (634 to 682 millimeters) and is hiked up or slid down by easy movements with the seat and bodywork. An even lower seat height can be achieved by dropping the forks down in the triple clamps. The frame is forged from lightweight, high-strength chromium-molybdenum steel for precise agility and stability, but a new 2025 modification provides more robustness, handling and a tougher rear shock mounting point.

WP Suspension for That Factory Feeling

The adult bike pedigree means the suspension equipment for the KTM SX-E 5 is formidable. A fully adjustable, upside-down WP XACT air fork with a 35-millimeter tube diameter and 205 millimeters of travel ensures comfort and confidence. The air spring fitted in the left fork leg can be adjusted perfectly to the rider’s weight using a simple air pump. The WP XACT shock absorber is also flexible (preload, rebound and compression) and linked directly to the cast swingarm, providing excellent damping performance with 193 millimeters of travel.

Battery Bounty

The battery on the KTM SX-E 5 is constructed from 84 modern lithium-ion cells in a robust die-cast aluminum casing, harnessing energy for 907 watt-hours: enough for two hours of a relaxed rhythm riding or 30 minutes of hardcore throttle abuse for race conditions. An advanced battery management system administers and preserves the lifecycle of the battery.

Counting the Charge

The KTM SX-E 5’s charging time has been reduced, with 0% to 80% capacity achievable in 45 minutes while 0% to 100% is possible in just 70 minutes. The external worldwide charger supplying up to 900 watts can be connected to any 110- or 230-volt socket. Safety features? Of course. A rollover sensor cuts off the power in the event of a fall, while a wrist lanyard cut-off key stops the motor in the event of an uncontrollable riding scenario. Ride modes can be locked and saved with a dongle that can be found under the seat.

The Perks of the Parts

Outright performance is not the only benefit of the 2025 KTM SX-E 5. The motorcycle comes with a host of outstanding parts so that the bikes sit comfortably in the full all-conquering KTM SX range. Strong, aluminum alloy NEKKEN handlebars taper from 28 millimeters in the center to 22 millimeters in the bend to 18 millimeters in the grip, enabling the use of thinner lock-on ODI grips, engineered especially for electric drive. Also, on a theme of strength, the bike has light, black, anodized aluminum rims (12-inch front and 10-inch rear) with MAXXIS MX-ST tires for superb all-round traction across diverse terrain. Top-spec wheels are common components through the full-size KTM SX range. Another area of shared engineering is the hydraulic brake calipers and waved discs front and rear, supplied by braking expert Brembo. The design of the KTM SX-E 5 features the latest in-mold graphics, with a bold orange livery that perfectly sets off the factory-look orange frame, orange seat and race-sharpened, narrow bodywork.

The new 2025 KTM SX-E 5 will be rolling off the Austria production line and available at authorized KTM dealers from November onward. For more information, visit ktm.com.

OEM Update: Can-Am Motorcycles https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/oem-update-can-am-motorcycles/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcyclepowersportsnews.com/?p=203268 Can-Am’s long-awaited return to two wheels officially arrives with the Pulse and Origin.

Over four decades after Can-Am’s exit from the two-wheeled motorcycle market, the brand has bolted back onto the scene with its long-awaited electric models, the Pulse and Origin. Although Can-Am first revealed the bike concepts back in August 2022, the formal product launch took place during the Club BRP 2025 event in Anaheim, California, just a few weeks ago, where the company announced the bikes will at last enter production in the final quarter of 2024 and roll into dealerships in early 2025.

Pulling Ahead of the Curve

Why did BRP/Can-Am decided to reenter the motorcycle market with electric (EV) models? The company’s unequivocal answer is, “Why not?”

Having been with the company for 30 years, Sandy Scullion, president of powersports and marine at BRP, notes that everyone there has been dreaming of returning to two-wheels for decades. However, when the decision to move forward finally came, he says, “We didn’t want to do it following what everybody else did.”

After watching trends in the automotive space, BRP decided to take a proactive stance, believing that EV technology presents a unique opportunity to compete in a shifting powersports market.

“Going EV was kind of a competitive advantage because it resets everyone in the same stage. It’s not like other brands have 20 years of experience and we don’t,” explains Scullion. While that automotive surge in EV interest has not yet translated into powersports, he notes it’s only a matter of time. To that end, Scullion adds that while Can-Am’s motorcycles may not remain exclusively electric, the current focus is on establishing leadership in the electric powersports sector.

BRP’s experience in producing its electric Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, which operate in some of the toughest environments, provided valuable insights for the development of the Pulse and Origin. As Scullion puts it, “If you can make it work there, you can certainly make it work in a lot of other things.”

It’s actually this in-house developed technology that helps set the Pulse and Origin apart from other EV bikes on the market.

“We decided to take a modular approach to the EV components, whether we’re talking about the motor inverter, the charger, the battery, even the software running all of this,” Scullion says. “That technology is going to be leveraged through other products as well. And the challenge for us was how do we make sure we achieve that modularity without compromise?”

Packaging all those products — especially the battery, the position of which affects the bikes’ balance — without compromising the vehicles’ dynamics proved especially difficult. In the end, however, Can-Am was able to develop each bike with its own distinct style: the Pulse, a naked street bike aimed towards city riders, and the Origin, a dual-sport model with all-terrain readiness, the name and design of which harken back to Can-Am’s motocross origins. In addition, the latter model will have a special “Origin 73” trim version that features LED lighting, a LinQ windscreen, and signature paint and badging.

Key Features

BRP learned from its electric snowmobiles to create motorcycles that are extremely low-maintenance and offer a smooth ride. The Pulse and Origin are both equipped with an 8.9-kilowatt-hour battery — tested in both desert heat and blistering winter temperatures — offering a city range of 100 miles for the Pulse and 90 miles for the Origin. The Pulse boasts a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.8 seconds, while the Origin follows at 4.3 seconds.

Charging times are equally impressive, with the bikes going from 20% to 80% capacity in just 50 minutes using Level 2 charging, thanks to the battery’s liquid cooling system. This technology alone sets the bikes apart from others on the market.

“Ours will charge much faster because the batteries and the inverter and all the components are always at the right temperature,” Scullion explains.

Additionally, the bikes feature both a reverse function as well as Active ReGen controlled by the throttle. “You throttle for power, but then you [throttle] back for regen, and then you can actually modulate this depending on how much ReGen you want,” Scullion notes, underscoring the analog-like feel of the system and how, similar to a brake, it enhances control and smooths deceleration while giving more power back to the battery.

Like all electric motorcycles, acceleration is instant from the get-go, and both the Pulse and Origin put out 47 horsepower (35 kilowatts). In addition, Scullion notes the quietness of the ride is shocking. The instant torque and lack of noise create a unique riding experience that targets both new and experienced riders alike.

Sights Set on Different Targets

The Pulse and Origin are aimed at a variety of customers. While these bikes are not meant for tourers, potential customers would instead include early adopters of electric vehicles, seasoned motorcyclists looking for a fresh riding experience and even new riders drawn to the simplicity of riding an electric bike.

“There’s this quadrant of new entrants, people who don’t know they need a bike yet, [who’s] going to be attracted to the no-clutch ease of using one hand,” Scullion remarks.

As for where these bikes will be available, Can-Am currently is cherry-picking the dealers who show the most potential and readiness to take on these EVs. The company is putting together a training regimen for those dealers to cover the technical, safety and sales aspects of the bikes. That said, Scullion notes that BRP has been pleased with the pre-sale of many dealer allocations already.

While Can-Am has only revealed two bike models so far, Scullion says, just as with any BRP brand, more models will be developed in the future. Furthermore, given the modularity of the different components, he hints at more EVs to come across various BRP brands, adding, “It’s obvious we have not developed all of this only for motorcycles.”

For the moment, however, Can-Am is focusing on dealers understanding these products and learning how to accessorize them. The excitement from dealers around the Pulse and Origin has been “impressive,” according to Scullion, “so I’m really looking forward to the next few quarters and how this is going to go.”
